Halloween Treats

Here are some of our favorite ideas for Halloween treats.  These recipes are easy and fun and your children will probably enjoy making them as well as eating them!  You could serve these treats as party food at a kids party or give them out to any trick or treaters that call.

Crackle Cakes

You will need:

A large bar of cooking chocolate
Breakfast cereal such as crisped rice or cornflakes
Paper cake cases

Place the cake cases on a tray.  Break the chocolate into pieces and put in a bowl.  Put the bowl over a pan of simmering water and melt the chocolate.  When the chocolate has melted, remove it from the heat and stir in the cereal – add enough to make a thick mixture.  Spoon the mixture into individual cake cases and leave in the fridge for the chocolate to harden again.

Eyeballs

You will need:

A packet of marshmallows
Raisins or currants
Red jam such as raspberry or strawberry

Use a small amount of jam to stick a raisin or currant on the top of each marsh mallow so it looks like an eyeball.  The red jam will look like blood and add to the effect.

Pumpkins

Small pumpkins can be carved out to make holders for dips such as guacamole or hummus, and you can cut up some celery and carrot sticks for people to dip in.  If you have time you could draw or carve faces on the pumpkins so it looks like the kids are eating the brains!

Don’t throw out the pumpkin seeds that you scoop out.  These can be roasted with a little olive oil on a baking tray in a hot oven for about 10 minutes to make a healthy snack.  You could call them witches finger nails!

Ready made snacks

If you’re pushed for time, you could get use you imagination to give ready made foods Halloween related names.  for instance, chocolate raisins could be bat droppings and popcorn could be mini-brains.  Your kids can help you come up with suitably disgusting names for everyday foods!
