Halloween Makeup Ideas

Applying Halloween makeup can add the finishing touches to your costume and can transform your face into that of your chosen character, making you almost unrecognizable as yourself!  Depending on your costume, you could buy a specially made Halloween makeup kit, which will come with face paint and other cosmetics, as well as instructions on how to use it.  However, you could be creative and do your own homemade makeup using cosmetics you already have, such as lipstick, rouge, eye shadow and foundation.

If you decide to buy a Halloween makeup set, check that the ingredients are hypoallergenic, especially if you have sensitive skin.  If in doubt, do a patch test a few days before your Halloween party to see if your skin reacts.  In any case, it is a good idea to practice applying your makeup before the day of the party, so you can perfect your look.

In this guide, you’ll find some tips and techniques on how to apply Halloween makeup and what supplies you’ll need.

Halloween Makeup Supplies

The things you’ll need for applying your makeup for Halloween will depend on what your costume is.  For thick makeup, you will need a spatula, which is particularly useful for applying fake blood or wax scars.

You’ll find it useful to have a selection of makeup brushes for applying loose powder.  A large brush is handy if you want to cover most of your face in makeup; if you want a Gothic look with a deathly pale face, for example.  A smaller brush can be used for details.

Foam sponges are useful for covering your face or a part of your body in makeup.  Smaller sponges can be used to create texture.

Don’t forget you’ll need to remove all that makeup after the party, so make sure you have plenty of cleanser, eye makeup remover and cotton balls on hand at the end of the night.

Tips for Applying Halloween Makeup

When you’re getting dressed up in your Halloween party costume, as you would with regular makeup, make sure you clean your face and moisturize first, then apply foundation and face powder.  Try to use a well-lit mirror so you can see what you’re doing!  If you want to look like a ghost or zombie, use very pale foundation to lighten the appearance of your skin, and add baby powder for an even whiter look.  Blue, purple and dark grey eye shadows can be smudged together to make fake bruises.

Black eyeliner is useful for highlighting your eyes and can be used to good effect as part of a cat or vampire outfit.  Lots of smudged dark eye shadow can help you look like a witch.  To get a scary, ghostly look, use white eye creme on your eyelids and below your eyes as well.
